Jim Gatto is a partner in Sheppard Mullin’s Washington D.C. office, where he founded and co-leads the firm's 120+ person Artificial Intelligence Team. With a robust technical background and over 35 years of experience, Jim provides strategic, business-focused advice on all aspects of intellectual property, technology transactions, regulatory issues, and litigation, particularly those driven by innovative business models and disruptive technologies.
Jim has over 20 years of experience assisting clients with AI-related matters, including handling AI patents, intellectual property issues, client training, policy development, regulatory advice, and AI diligence. He also leads the Open Source team, offering guidance on legal issues and policies related to open source, including the use of AI code generators.
A prolific author, blogger, and speaker on AI legal issues, Jim has served as an Adjunct Professor at Ole Miss Law School, teaching “Legal Issues with AI.” He holds leadership positions and memberships in AI committees of several leading legal organizations such as the American Bar Association, American Intellectual Property Law Association, and International Technology Law Association.
Recently, Jim was invited to speak at the Korean Copyright Office on “AI and Open Source” and participated in the US Copyright Office and USPTO listening sessions on AI.
