John Rosenthal continues to be a globally recognized practitioner in the field of e-discovery, privacy, data security and artificial intelligence. John has been ranked in Chambers USA from 2012–2025, and in Chambers Global from 2013–2025 as one of the nation’s top lawyers in e-discovery litigation practice. He is one of four lawyers ranked as “Star Individual” for E-Discovery & Information Governance. He has also been recognized in The Legal 500 US from 2019–2024 as a “Leading Lawyer” for eDiscovery. Over the last year, John continued to be involved in some of the largest and most complex matters in the U.S., including MDLs, consolidated proceedings, and class actions involving some of the most novel issues facing multiple industries to include automotive, agricultural, technology, financial and insurance.
With his technical background, John has become a leader advising clients as well as software providers regarding the adoption and use of Generative AI within the legal industry to include the use of Generative AI in e-discovery for relevance determination, fact development, privilege analysis, and document analysis. In 2025, he was also name by Lawdragon as one of the 100 Leading AI and Legal Technical Advisors in the United States. John is also a co-author of the ABA’s recent publication entitled Artificial Intelligence: Legal Issues, Policy, and Practical Strategies (2024). John sits on the AI Advisory Board of several of the large e-discovery providers in this space.
John operates as national counsel for several Fortune 500 companies. John has continued his work in e-discovery on some of the highest profile MDL and class and collective matters in the U.S. He continues to actively work in the areas of privacy and data security, where Winston’s practice group assists clients in the compliant international transfer of data in the context of litigation and regulatory investigations. Over the last year, John has been heavily involved in assisting companies in the evaluation, adoption and compliance with AI in the context of litigation.
John continues to be considered an industry thought leader and is actively engaged through Lawyers for Civil Justice (LCJ) in federal and state rules reform proposed changes to the Federal Rules relating to the admissibility of AI.
John’s thought leadership extends through his active leadership as continued co-chair of the PLI’s Annual eDiscovery Program, a Board Member of Georgetown Advanced eDiscovery Institute (including member of the planning board), and his status as a former Steering Committee member of The Sedona Conference Working Group 1 (evolving domestic e-Discovery issues and best practices) and as a member of Working Group 6 (international and cross-border e-Discovery issues) and Working Group 11 (data security and privacy issues).
He is a member of the E-Discovery Committee of the District of Columbia. He is intimately involved in judicial education, including as a contributing author of the soon to be published Federal Judge’s Guide to eDiscovery (5th ed.).
