John Rosenthal is a litigation partner in the firm's Washington, D.C. office who represents clients around the globe in an array of complex litigation matters, class action and multidistrict litigation. He also has substantial experience defending clients before federal and state enforcement agencies. His substantive focus includes business litigation, products liability, unfair competition, and false advertising.
Mr. Rosenthal is one of the most experienced practitioners in the United States in the areas of electronic discovery, information governance and privacy. With this background, he counsels a wide variety of companies on record retention programs, compliance with electronic discovery, and the implementation of programs to reduce risk associated with the generation and retention of electronic records and privacy. Given strong background in technology, he has been actively advising clients regarding the adoption, use and governance of AI. John has lectured and written extensively on the topic, including as a contributing author to the American Bar Association’s publication Artificial Intelligence: Legal Issues, Policy, and Practical Strategies.
Mr. Rosenthal was ranked in Chambers USA 2012–2025 and in Chambers Global 2013–2025 as one of the nation’s top lawyers in eDiscovery litigation practice. He was recognized as a “Star Individual” for E-Discovery & Information Governance by Chambers globally and in the United States. Mr. Rosenthal is a member of the District of Columbia Bar Association’s e-discovery committee. He is a participant in Working Groups 1 and 6 of the Sedona Conference on Best Practices for Electronic Discovery and Records Management. Mr. Rosenthal also is an advisory board member of the Georgetown University Law Center Continuing Legal Education E-Discovery Institute.
